In July of 1998 while at work I tore a cartilage in my right knee. September of 1998 I had surgery to fix the tear. But the pain would not go away, it was only increasing. My right knee felt like it was on fire-The pain increased when anything touched my knee. Even a breeze blowing caused the pain to increase. I went again to see the surgeon that had performed the surgery. He told me to learn to live with It., and walked out of the room! I was not happy at all with that choice; I went back to the occupational doctor that was treating my knee at the time. I told her what the doctor had told me, and that if I had to live with this, I would. But I wanted a second opinion. She agreed and sent me to an orthopedic specialist in Seattle WA . In the fall of 1999- I was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome/Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. (CRPS/ RSD ) At that time only the inner portion of my right knee was affected. The doctor that diagnosed the CRPS/ RSD , told my husband (John) and I to see Dr. X, to have a series of nerve blocks done, and that there was about an 80% chance that the CRPS/ RSD could go into remission. (I know it's only an 80% chance, but its my knee) The state denied the suggested medical treatment, (which is one of L&I's recommended treatments for CRPS/ RSD ) and pretty much ignored the diagnosis of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. The CRPS/ RSD soon started to spread, and now affects my legs, my left arm, my neck and now my face. Now here it is 2007, as I look back over the years, I feel so blessed. Blessed to have had the privilege of meeting others who suffer with the challenges of Chronic Pain; I've met their loved ones who worry for them, as they see their spouse-mom-dad-grandma-grandpa-aunts-uncles-brothers-sisters, a friend suffer every day with Chronic Pain. I'm honored to be a spokes person for them and their families, and look forward to joining hands and pushing forward to bring Chronic Pain Awareness to Washington State ! John and I look forward to sharing with you how Chronic Pain has affected our family, and what we've done to make our lives better as we battle the pain together.

Yours truly,

John & Carol
